Last November 24, 2021 until November 26, 2021, UP Cebu celebrated the National Science & Technology Week (NSTW) 2021 with a series of webinars which focuses on the various scientific innovations and research projects contributed by the University to the public. Hosted by UP Cebu’s NSTW Committee with Mr. Jason Nieva as committee head, in partnership with DOST, NSTW 2021 kicked off with the theme, “Agham at Teknolohiya: Tugon sa Hamon ng Panahon”
The webinar series consisted of 5 webinars where majority were ran through Open Broadcaster Software or OBS ( thanks to Sir Enzo Baccay) via Zoom. The other technical tasks were also done with the help of TLRC and the PIO. Special Messages were also given by UP Cebu Chancellor Liza D. Corro and DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development, Usec. Rowena Cristina Guevara.
1.) Project Abag: Helping Communities through Research
Hosted by Communications Professor and Broadcaster, Prof. Annie Fe Perez-Gallardo, Project Abag presented Science and Technology Research Projects and Innovations by UP Cebu Professors and the UP Cebu Center for Environmental Informatics or CENVI. These presentations were then reacted by the people who witnessed and benefitted with the projects. These projects help in understanding and mitigating climate change, exploring sustainable waste management and energy resources, and providing innovative and scientific solutions to environmental problems.
2.) Going UP – Usapang Pananaliksik
Going UP also presented the researches of the UP Cebu Faculty members from the Department of Biology and Environmental Studies and of the Mathematics and Statistics Programs. Majority of their research presented discussed on how environmental changes and phenomena can affect the biological processes of organisms. Mr. Ramises Manzano’s research tackled about Pseudo Hyper GR-Algebra while Dr. Cherry Alota talked about her research on Large Graph Limit of an Edge-based SEIR Dynamics on a Static Random Network.
3.) Klik-Lakbay: A Mataverse Experience
The webinar tackled on the commercial adoption of immersive technology in the country by one of the incubatee from UP Cebu’s Technology Business Incubator (TBI), MATAVERSE (visit mataverse.ph). The session’s speaker was the co-founder of Mataverse himself, Mr. Ryan Tan Yu. He discussed about the company’s history including how it was formed, its changes and challenges through the years, and the impacts that the company has made. He has also highlighted how DOST and UP Cebu’s TBI has helped and guided Mataverse as a start-up corporation. UP Cebu’s Virtual Tour, a project by Mataverse in partnership with UP Cebu inIt, was also launched on the event.
4.) Reboot: Teaching Robotics in an Online Environment
UP High School and Computer Science Professor, Mr. Fernand Bernardez discusses on how Robotics was integrated into UP High School’s curriculum. He also talked about how he teaches the subject in a remote learning setup during the pandemic and what tool has helped him with it. As support to his discussion, he gathered his students’ insights on how it was learning Robotics in an online environment.
5.) Fablab: Creating with the Community Amidst a Disaster
On the last leg of the NSTW 2021 Webinar series, Fablab showcased various projects they have supported and produced in collaboration with other creators, in partnership also with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). They have also discussed how Fablab were able to create personal protective equipment for the frontliners in the height of the pandemic. Fablab, with UP Cebu inIT, also paved the way to new innovations and startups such as LIFT, which is developing a prototype to help revolutionize the aviation education industry in the country.
